The Register of Health and Merit (RoHM) is the central clearing house of the Parson Russell Terrier, Jack Russell Terrier and Russell Terrier for verified genetic tests and meritorious awards earned for the individuals of the breeds that participate in the Register. The Register is dedicated to the genetic well being of the breeds without regard to registry affiliation or lack thereof. It was conceived by breeders and is supported by breeders and individuals who take the motto "Preserve and Protect" to heart by listing breeding stock in a central location where it can be accessed and evaluated for the purposeful selection of the highest quality genetic and performance tested breeding stock. Health clearances will include BAER, CERF, OFA, Von Willebrands and other clearances, as the need becomes apparent. In addition, RoHM will be able to verify and certify the background and pedigrees of those dogs listed in the register. By promoting the use of individuals that test clear of genetic diseases and have earned performance and conformation awards, we can, as breeders, contribute to a positive future for the breed. The use of listed kennels and individual dogs will allow those terriers that continue to test clear for certain genetic defects to be presented to the breeding public. By breeding only "clean" individuals and steering away from those individuals that do not hold genetic clearances we will we will be able to breed towards a genetically sounder future for the Parson, Jack and Russell Terriers. RoHM requires all who participate to list their dogs to present hard copies of genetic tests, awards earned, pedigrees, registration certificates as well as a signed release to be listed on the web site. All information will be submitted to the RoHM Committee for verification and approval prior to listing. All information submitted to the RoHM becomes the sole property of the RoHM Register for distribution and publication. Individual and Kennel Profiles Information to be included on a dog's profile will include the dog's breed, registered name, date of birth, registration number (owner’s option), sex, sire and dam, height, color, earned titles (conformation, hunting and other performance awards) as well as any genetic test performed on the dog. Information on the kennels listed will include the owner's name, address, phone and fax, e-mail address and a link to each respective kennel's web site. You may list one dog, some of your dogs or all of your dogs at your discretion. Because some health clearances such as CERF need to be done every year and because dogs generally earn performance and conformation awards as the years progress, we encourage you to update you dog's clearances and awards. Please click the button on the menu panel to the left entitled "Join RoHM." There you will see an explanation of health clearances and what constitutes "Merit" awards. You will also find a schedule of fees and applications to enter your kennel, your individual dogs and to update the health clearances and merit awards on your individual dogs. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to email the RoHM and we will get back with you as soon as possible. Anytime you wish to return to the front page of the RoHM website, just click the gold terrier at the top of each menu panel. RoHM History The original RoHM database began in 1982 when Jack Russell Terrier breeder Patty Lapinski began to gather pedigrees on superior individuals with characteristics of temperament, conformation and working that were considered vital to the preservation of the Jack Russell Terrier. As genetic health problems became apparent, Mrs. Lapinski expanded her focus to include those individuals who did not exhibit health problems and in time, those dogs that passed specific genetic clearances. Patty said, "I began 'collecting' pedigrees, so that if and when I decided to breed a litter I’d be able to make a more educated guess as to just what I’d be producing. If I spotted a pup I loved, I’d make it a point to get a copy of it’s pedigree....the same for dogs who seemed to consistently produce pups who impressed me. The same went for the 'don’t likes' as well as the British dogs who were beginning to make their mark in our country." "When AKC accepted the Jack Russell Terrier into FSS, one of the biggest complaints by JRTCA members who might have applied, was that there was no health requirements necessary for registration. Through my background in German Shepherds (thanks to Dan and Sharon Dwyer) I was acquainted with the idea of a Register of Merit. All it took was a comment or two from like minded breeders, and the Jack Russell Terrier Register of Health and Merit was born. My personal feeling was that since tests were becoming increasingly available to locate genetic problems, we have the opportunity to prevent the proliferation of problems in this 'new breed', an opportunity that 'older' breeds didn’t have." "At present, the Register contains my original database, most of the original dogs taken into FSS, the JRTAA Stud Books, the JRTCA Stud Books and all dogs registered with AKC from February 1998 to present taken from the AKC's own Stud Books. All registration numbers for a given dog are entered wherever possible. Data entry on current months is an ongoing project, and breeders/owners from all clubs continue to send in pedigrees and health clearances, along with championship certificates, conformation titles, working certificates, obedience titles etc. It’s a very rare situation that a dog comes into the register whose background is not already listed." Owners wishing to 'list' a dog with RoHM will see that dog on the RoHM web site showing his accomplishments and health certifications. Along with this RoHM can also provide an 'official' or Certified Pedigee, indicating that each dog has a traceable background through those already listed in the database. In addition, once a sire or dam has proven themselves to be a producer of 'proven' quality stock which had acquired both health clearances and certificates of merit, they receive the designation of 'advanced' register of health and merit." RoHM the Future As does any monumental effort of this type, maintaining the ever growing RoHM data base became more than one person could manage, as a result Patty gave the RoHM Register, its funding, administration and management along with the RoHM web site to the Blue Grass Parson Russell Terrier Club. The RoHM Register looks forward to the expansion of the RoHM and its increasing value in helping serious breeders make more knowledgeable breeding decisions based on the genetic health and merit of a growing data base of Parson, Jack and Russell Terriers.
